Yesterday Tennessee fired coach Bruce Pearl and it made me sick to my stomach. I had a long day of traveling from Spring Break so I was already fatigued and pissed off... so you can imagine my dismay when I nestled in a corner booth of a California Pizza Kitchen in LAX and come to see that one of my favorite coaches is currently unemployed. Pearl resurrected Tennessee and brought life to that program that few coaches do anywhere else. He brought them to their first elite eight and wore outrageous suits such as this one, and also painted his body like a frat boy dickhead... except he wasn't a dickhead but rather the coolest man in Knoxville. Tennessee has had trouble with coaches the past couple of years with their two biggest programs. Lane Kiffin basically said go fuck yourself and bolted to USC after a year at Rocky Top, so naturally people hated him. Not Bruce though, there were protesters chanting "We want Bruce!" after his firing.
So where does Pearl go now? Well I can only think of NC State because it is in a power conference and just like when Tennessee hired Pearl, they are looking for someone who can bring them back to recognition. No doubt old man Julius Hodge will have something to say about that hiring (is he still alive?)
PS- Tennessee couldn't have waited until Pearl's son Steven graduated? I mean the kid is on the team, I doubt he will transfer but having his dad fired must have been a real kick to Steven's pearls. Good luck Bruce, wherever you go.
